Nora Jacobson, filmmaker, producer, director,cinematographer, and founder of Off The Grid Productions, Norwich, VT.
Nora was born in Norwich, Vermont. She moved to Paris, France with her family when she was eight, and returned to the USA at fifteen where she finished highschool. Jacobson became interested in filmmaking first at Antioch College where she studied with Paul Sharits, then at Dartmouth College, where she earned a B.A. in French literature and anthropology. She pursued her love of filmmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received an MFA and studied with Stan Brakhage and other experimental filmmakers.
Nora Jacobson's documentary Delivered Vacant about gentrification in Hoboken, NJ premiered at the New York Film Festival . It also played at the Sundance Film Festival and won a Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco Film Festival. Praised by critics, the film was hailed by Vincent Canby of The New York Times as "a fine, rich film...an urban epic." Delivered Vacant is distributed by Cinema Guild.
My Mother's Early Lovers, her first dramatic film, was adapted from an autobiographical memoir by Vermont writer Sybil Smith, and shot in her native Vermont. The film won the Jury Award at Film Fest New Haven, the Audience Award at the Maine International Film Festival, and Best Independent Film at Ajijic Festival Internacional de Cine in Mexico. Jacobson collaborated with Dragon Dance Theatre on Sun and Moon were Children and Walked on the Earth, a short film which explores an ancient Mexican myth about the birth of the sun and moon. It is available from Off The Grid Productions.
Jacobson recently completed her 2nd dramatic feature film, Nothing Like Dreaming, (writer/director/editor), starring George Woodard, Morgan Bicknell, folk singer Rachel Bissex, John Griesemer, Siri Baruc and Rusty Dewees. The film won Best in Fest at Lake Placid Film Festival,amd also played at Northampton Independent Film Festival, Woods Hole Independent Film Festival, Hearts & Minds Film Festival, Maine International Film Festival and Green Mountain Film Festival. It recently opened in Boston at The Museum of Fine Arts and is playing in selected theatrical venues.
Jacobson is currently developing several new feature film projects and documentaries.
